The Bromeliad Family is a large family with 56 genera and 2,600 species is almost entirely limited to the New World - one species of Pitcairnia is found in Western Africa. Although more well known for showy tropical foliage plants and the food crop pineapple, this family also has many members that come from arid and semi arid habitats that exhibit leaf succulence.
