Rhaphiolepis umbellata 'Minor' (Indian Hawthorn) - A slow, compact upright broadleaf evergreen shub that grows to 4-5 feet tall by 2-3 feet wide with dense barnches. Leaves simple, small, about 2.5 cm long, glossy dark green above, clustered at end of branches with the new growth coppery red. White flowers bloom in late spring. Plant is full sun to light shade. Hardy to 15-20° F. Drought tolerant. A great shrub for a foundation planting or low hedge. Greek raphis for needle and lepis for scale to describe the unique flower bract architecture. R. umbellata is native to both Japan and Korea, and no doubt parts of far Eastern China.
The description above is based on our research and observations of this plant growing in our nursery and in our own and other Santa Barbara gardens. We would appreciate hearing from anyone who has additional information or disagrees with what we have written.
